Ordinary People
To the ordinary man sitting at the table next to me
I saw the overdue electricity bill accompanied by
A calculator and finger on your temple
I saw your 6 year old son run to you
With so much excitement
You still bought him an ice cream cone
Here’s to the ordinary people who can’t always pay the bills on time
To my ordinary mom
Who has kept a trash can especially designated
To discarded pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters
Who got so excited when we cashed it and it came out to
$230
“I’m going to take us out somewhere nice!”
Here’s to the ordinary people who try to make their loved one’s day
A little brighter with their own hard work
Here’s to the construction workers
Who give us roofs over our head
Schools to learn in
Sanctuaries and churches to practice our faith
Without you, where would these things take place?
Thankyou to all of the ordinary people
For being so extraordinary

I wrote an ode to all the ordinary people in my life. I was inspired by my favorite artist who famously said, "It's time for ordinary people to show their faces."
