My hope is for the world to change
It is for me to hope what I want to hope and not have any limits
For my hopes to come out from shelter in the barbs of my feathers because they’re being dragged into the deepest darkness of despair

I hope to be confident
I hope to be kind
I hope to be beautiful
And I hope to be the image of a perfect girl in my own eyes

But this is impossible
Because in this world
I can’t be Confident without being conceited
I can’t be Kind without being fake
I can’t be Beautiful without being treated like a toy given to dogs
And I can’t Hope without limits

My hope is for the world to change
It is for my hopes to come out from shelter in the barbs of my feathers because they’re afraid of being judged
Because they’re afraid of being different
Because they’re afraid of being bullied
Because they’re afraid of being annoying
Because they’re afraid of this world

But this is impossible
Because though my hopes will always follow me in the darkest places of my mind
These hopes will always die

The author's comments:

This piece is a response to "Hope is the Thing With Feathers" written by Emily Dickinson. I hope that people will see that society today casts so much judgment that it is impossible to be who you truly are. Many are afraid to show their true self because of judgment to the extent in which people just do not try to be different. It is easier to conform than it is to true.
