I Once Knew a Girl

I once knew a girl

but she lived in a bubble,

she saw marble floors

when we trudged through the rubble,

her eyes sparkled bright

as she watched in her silence,

her ears blocking out

all the noise of the violence.

I once knew a girl

with hands dripping with red,

but with gloves laced with gold,

she had no tears to shed,

and the people cried out,

first in peace, then in riot,

but bubbles are made

to help keep the world quiet.

I once knew a girl

and then later, a curse,

for the girl had a shield

to protect from the worst,

and the shrieks were still shrill,

but they suffered unheard;

in her bubble, the girl

never uttered a word.

I once knew a girl

who had never found reason

to end all the bloodspill,

the murder, the treason,

for life's better-lived

muting out all the trouble -

I once knew a girl,

but she lived in a bubble.
