Go ahead and mock me
Cause I’m getting ready.
I can’t hide from the light of day.
If I could, I’d have it any other way.
So go ahead Jim Crow,
I ain’t a dumb Jane Doe.
I won’t dance at your request,
Won’t hop in the crow’s nest.
Go ahead and mock me
Cause I’ve been ready.
Your words won’t hurt,
Can’t throw me in the dirt.
So go ahead Jim Crow,
I ain’t a dumb Jane Doe
Watch me live free
I’ll be unchained, you’ll see.
Go ahead and mock me
Cause I was born ready.
Can’t drop me to the ground
Cause it’s your head I’ll pound.

I was inspired to write this piece at first because of an assignment we had to do in class. We were studying the Civil Rights Movement and I came up with this poem. This poem is about redemption and survival and how hard people had it back then.
