Momma?

what bright light is that i see?
the doctors are speaking
...foreign?
what is that wailing?
oh! is it me?
ah! so cold! that water
pouring over me
the nurse smiles
is she cooing?
stop that this instant.
is this really my father?
oh, my. hope i didn't inherit those ears.
momma?

what bright light is that i see?
the sun, shining back at me.
i'm riding bikes
with my BFF, best friends forever
only the curb is too sharp
oh! searing pain
shooting through my knee
my cheeks
they're wet
i must have been crying
dad takes me inside
puts a bandaid on it
after cleaning the scrape with
peroxide
the door opens
momma?

what bright light is that i see?
disco ball hanging over me
and my date
prom
everyone's favorite night
and dance
a first and last for me
for romance
we've been together for
months
he brings me home
leaves me broken and torn
in more ways than one
momma?

what bright light is that i see?
the doctors again
only she's coming from me
my only child
a sweetheart
my darling
how could i ever have thought...?
i'll care for you always
and love you for more...
oh, i hear the door...
momma?

what bright light is that i see?
a tunnel?
no way, they're all crazy
there's my gram, pops
my husband, my child
all there to greet me
yet there is only one face
i want
no
need
to see...
momma?
