“Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book.”
― John Green, The Fault in Our Stars

Cicadas chirp, an owl hoots
As I lay in my bed.
I want to sleep, but all I feel
Is pounding in my head.

My nightlight shines, so I feel calm.
But, suddenly, I see
A hundred big black shadows dancing quickly over me.

They turn and leap, but then they go
And all that still stays here
Is the deep and scary voice
That is whispering in my ear.

"Hello, My Darling, don't you fret,
It'll all be over soon."
But there's no time to listen
As I'm running from my room.

The heavy tears drip down my face
As I run down the hall.
I turn the corner, pull the door
Then, I yell and call.

"Mommy, mommy, wake up now!"
I cry by her bed.
I pull and poke and tug her
Until she lifts her head.

She reaches out and hugs me
And she softly pets my hair.
"Sweetie, Sweetie, look at me,
I promise- nothing's really there."

She tells me I'm just tired
And I need to go to sleep.
But, Mommy, Mommy, look! he's real!
He's standing next to me!

She takes my hand and wipes my tears
As she leads me to my bed.
She lifts me up and tucks me in
And plants a light kiss on my head.

She turns the corner from my room
And I'm left all alone,
Laying in the darkness
In the comfort of my home.

I close my eyes to rest and sleep
But then I feel a chill.
"Why, My Darling, look at you:
So quiet and so still."

I try to run, but I can't move
'Cause something holds me down.
I kick and scream, and then I see
A girl with stitches on her mouth.

She looks so sad as she stands there.
From her eye, a tear drips
I think she'll come and help,
But then she puts one finger to her lips.

I want to scream, but when I try,
I can't move my mouth.
"Oh, My Darling, don't you cry,
No one can save you now."

He looks at me with creepy eyes
And a smile spreads across his mouth.
He laughs and laughs as he stares at me.
"Let's get started now."

"Oh no, My Darling, don't you dare.
Not even one remark."
He puts his hand up to my head.
Then, everything goes dark.
