The Letter

Sorry, dear friend
for forging his handwriting

and making you believe,
he ACTUALLY liked you.

Forgive me for
not being truthful the first time,

and for laughing at
your gullible, love-struck face.

The inspiration for this peice came from my English teacher when he handed out William Carlos Williams' poem "This is Just to Say" to my College Writing class. Williams' peice expresses a sarcastic apology when he ate the fruit left for someone else in the freezer. This poem expresses a situation involving a close friend of mine at the time who happened to like an senior, while she and I were sophomores. As a joke, which some people still frown upon to this day, I asked a guy friend to write a love letter to her from this senior she liked. Eventually she found out, and surprisingly she and the senior DID end up dating, but I still feel like it was a joke which very few people understood.
