In the World, Not of the World

Standing here

Everyone passing by

Changes all around

Knees bent down

Conforming to society’s whims

I stand here alone

Keeping my stance

Individual

I walk my own path

Not chained to this place

In the world, not of the world.

Embarking on a new life
Destiny’s plan before my eyes

My feet begin towards the light

I start a new beginning

Here I am

Standing here alone

Keeping my stance

I am myself

Individual

Spreading my wings

Free to fly

Not chained to this place

In the world, not of the world

The author's comments:
I read this poem aloud in my senior year for our Baccalaurete. I was the opening speaker. The theme of the ceremony was taken from my poem.
