What am I?

I am not what you seek to be,
Nor do you ever want to see me.
I am alone in the world,
And care for no one.
I am loved by none,
Yet feared by many.
I dwell in your dreams,
And lurk in your conscience.
I have survived millenniums,
Yet I am known by all.
I have been inscribed in texts,
But I am a mystery to man.
I am beyond the realm of thought,
And seek to be brought back.
What am I?
