The Absence of Breath

By
I lie flat on my back
and feel the damp grass
soak through my clothes.

I stare at the sky,
chest heaving like ocean swells,
and my eyes are open but not seeing.

I know something just happened
but I don't know what
or how to breathe.

I wonder where my breath
has gone, andy lie
there feeling helpless.

I have no air,and
I have no life
until my breath returns.
