Can't Go Back

September 19, 2008

I see my tears,
Reflected in the mirror.
It's only a matter of time
Before I'll be handed over.
Given to a new world.
Taken from the safety of my home.
I dread leaving.
Graduation looms ahead.
Though I still have a year,
I fear it already.
My mom's face flashes through my mind.
The tears fall harder.
Only a year.
I think of my friends.
I love them, how can I leave them?
I think of my family,
All loving in their own way.
It doesn't seem possible,
I remember sitting in my preschool.
I couldn't wait to grow up.
What wouldn't I give to go back?
But, we must go forward.
The only thing forward is the future.
The future.
The most frightening thing ever.

You did a really nice job of conveying the thoughts of people growing up facing new and remembering the things they will leave behind. This poem could fit for any age that is facing something new. Great Job!!!
