Light.
Light seeps in through darkness;
It whispers and reveals.
The doorway to life is opened.

The milky eyes blink,
The place of darkness is no longer.
She senses change,
The light weighs heavy.

The body is unmoving,
The brain is apprehensive.
Abreast her is the liberator,
Encompassing her are shadows.

Substance does not immediately come.
The inner chambers heave thrice.
Pain and emptiness consume fear,
The body controls the mind.

Her limbs are feeble and aquiver,
The ground shifts as she falls.
She inhales a familiar scent;
The scent protrudes from where the liberator lay.

Desire to soothe pain from within,
Burdens paramount on the mind.
Resilience enters the limbs,
The body is pushed into a bow.

Grasping unknown might,
The body becomes suspended,
All the limbs are drawn taught,
Four legs by which she is standing.

Now upright, she can see the liberator clearly.
The scent lies underneath.
One extremity reaches for the tantalizing taste,
And sets itself assuredly down on the rustling floor.

Listlessly she trudges on.
She does not halt when the liberator is erect.
Her body moves for her,
Finding the soft pink that carries the scent.

The chambers rumble and emptiness prevails.
The lips quickly engulf a fleshy nozzle.
Substance flows easily into her interior,
The emptiness is subdued, the chambers are content.

The movement has left her lethargic:
Brown eyes cloud over and blink,
The tongue lolls lazily from inside,
Her wobbly limbs give way.

The author's comments:
This year I enrolled in the Dairy Project. It has been a very different experience considering that I live in the city and the biggest animal I own is a dog. I was astounded by the peaceful nature of cows when I went out to the farm. I was inspired to write this poem after spending time in the calving barn.
