Breath
Just the way the sun plays with freckles on skin.
Just the way the breeze sweeps hair like banners in the wind.
Just the way dark clouds roll in from the ocean.
Just the way the rain beats the side of the house.
Just the way the air conditioner bends only slightly at the middle.
Just the way the grains of wood converge.
Just the way breathlessness arrives, unyielding but benign.
Just the way trees grow toward the sky.
Just the way birds know how to fly.
Just the way we say goodbye.
Just the way letters come.
Just the way grass is mowed.
Just the way the river flows, and ice freezes,
and small things grow.
Just that way.
How all things go.
