Not My Parents MAG
Not my parents
my parents had
straight teeth
My parents did not smoke
but one evening they sat me down on the couch.
I was in the middle with
Dad on one side
Mom on the other and
my mom said we were going to get
a Divorce.
Courtney’s parents were divorced
her dad had
long dirty hair and yellow teeth
Her mom smoked and wore tight jeans
When Courtney’s dad came over
they snapped bitter words at each other
Not my parents
They said it’s okay you can
tell us what you think. I
Stared at the coffee table
my voice shook as I explained
my theory
You guys aren’t like Courtney’s parents.
But then I remembered
As I lay in bed some nights
my father’s voice
exploding
through the apartment.
I had known something was wrong.
When we got up from the couch
My face was wet.
I realized
It could be my parents
