One of these Days

I know who a boy who used to sing the blues
He was really good at playing guitar
But then one day he started being rude
And the next thing I knew he got drunk in bars

And everyone around him
Cared about his life
They wanted him to succeed
Get a good job and a wife
But he blew them off
And he took his own path
He started smoking weed
And failing math

One of these days he’s gonna stop drinking
One of these days he’s gonna get thin
One of these days he’s gonna start thinking
One of these days he’s gonna go win
But for now all he does is sit on his couch
And he’s not getting anywhere
He’s just sitting there making plans for himself
But he’s not getting anywhere

Everyday his parents would go
Into the living room
He’d be sitting there eating a hamburger and fries
Watching The Late Show at noon
And his mother would ask if he’d seen his friends lately
And his father would joke and say he looked really good
Together they’d laugh till his face was all pasty
Then he’d grump and he’d growl that he wasn’t in the mood

His mother would sigh
A big grin on her face
Thinking back,
Remembering those days
As if they hadn’t been replaced
And she’d say:

One of these days you’re gonna get good grades
One of these days you’re gonna be nice
One of these days you’re gonna have it made
One of these days you’re gonna take our advice
But for now all he does is watch the T.V.
And he’s not getting anywhere
He’s just sitting there watching week after week
And he’s not getting anywhere

Well at first a couple buddies would hang out with him
Drink a couple of beers
Commit a couple of sins
But after a while they stopped coming back
They’d rather go out and do things
A living room lacked

And at first his old grandpa would still write him letters
Saying “I love you a lot”
And “I hope you get better”
But then after a while the letters slowed down
And the postcards stopped coming
And the photos thrown out

And his teachers stopped by
Said they were very concerned
They would sit next to him
Said they hoped he would learn
He would nod, he would smile
Let them stay for a while
And they’d think their talk worked
Till he called them a jerk

But they still believed:

One of these days he’s gonna realize it
One of these days it’s gonna sink in
One of these days he’s gonna revise it
One of these days it’s gonna be how it’s been
Yeah, one of these days, I just don’t know when
But for now all he does is eat, sleep and stare
And he’s not getting anywhere
He’s just going through a phase, I know it will end
Still, he’s not getting anywhere

His dog died
His dad got sick
His friend got in an accident
His mother cried
And still, he lied
Bout how he felt inside
It didn't sink in

And he said to himself:

One of these days I’m gonna get a job
One of these days I’m gonna make some money
One of these days I’m gonna draw a crowd
One of these days I’ll make my mom happy
One of these days I’ll meet some new people
One of these days I’ll write some new songs
One of these days I promise to keep all
Of the memories I’ll make playing baseball
But for now I’ll relax and have just one more drink
Today isn’t the day to start anything new
There’s no need, at this hour, to work hard or think
And worry about the job I will pursue

One of these days I’ll get up and go
One of these days I’ll be in a show
One of these days he’s gonna get better
One of these days—
Depending on the weather
