The Backyard

April 5, 2008
By Yael Bame, Hampstead, MD

The backyard is a new world
where dirt replaces
old wood flooring
and birds replace the chirping
of my cellphone
this is where my memories are
of the green as lime
and the dark as midnight
asphalt driveway
this is where I can remember
taking my first steps
and catching
lightning bugs
in the humid summer air
my dad alongside,
holding my hands
telling me over my wails and screams
that its the circle of life
that made the bug die
not my fist where it had been enclosed.
Consolation from a loving man to
a fearful child
