we are young we think we are free

we can be anything we want to be

but sometimes it’ll be just you and me

and eventually you’ll grow tired, you’ll see

and then we’ll see that life alone is not for us

you’d wish you hadn’t made such a fuss

but when you go back it’ll be just too late

they’ve already closed those white gates

but we’ll sit outside and wait and wait

writing songs about love and hate

I’ll give you my blanket, keep away the chill

We’ll think, “maybe they’ll come for us - they will”

I’ll remember to awaken you when they do

Pull you away from the dreams you new

And they’d yell and scold us until we cried

But then they’d hug us and end the fight

We would go inside and see the lights

Everything would be okay, everything alright

Tear-stricken faces climb into soft beds

No empty bellies, just filled and fed

And we’d succumb to slumber so ever fast.

They’d watch from the doorway, thinking “at last”

Our dreams would hold stories of the past

Just childhood memories, infinite and vast.
