When I Left Peru

When I left Peru,
it was a plane crash.
My sisters and I thought
everything
was lost,
and there was
nothing
we could do to take it back.

When I left Peru,
it was a hurricane.
We evacuated
in one night,
no time to pack all my stuff.

When I left Peru,
my house was a farmyard.
People were running around
like chickens,
clothes and suitcases
tossed on couches, floors, beds.

When I left Peru,
my head ached
from crying so hard
when I said goodbye
to my best friend Keren.
I cried more
when my dad told me
I couldn't bring my photos
to remember her.
