Keep Enemies Closer Than Friends (Sestina)
“Keep your friends close,
But closer keep your foe.”
A phrase commonly said.
Do you ever think…
What does it exactly mean?
Let’s discuss it, my love.
If there’s someone you love,
Hold him close.
If one is mean;
Thus, your foe,
Don’t let harsh words be said.
Just think…
Practically is not the way an enemy will think.
Confuse him and give him love.
Just do as I said.
Also, pull him close.
Yes, your foe.
Don’t say the words you mean.
If you do, you too will be mean.
Instead…think.
Be nice to your foe.
Show him love.
Stay beside him, close.
Obey the phrase I said.
“Why?” you said?
‘Cause I know what I mean.
If you keep an enemy close,
He will not know what to think.
Give him love
And he will not remain your foe.
“My foe?”
You said.
Yes. Do it, my love.
Don’t let yourself be mean.
Take a breath and think:
If you keep your enemy close
He may turn from being mean.
Then what will you think?
Possibly that you’re glad you kept him close.
