A mystery befalls me now;
It's heavy on my soul.
A silent hiss, hiss echoes
Behind tongues that cajole.

The motionless sky rests above
Flames lapping Phlegethon's banks.
A distant scream cuts the expanse,
Severing into flanks.

Once fairer than Aphrodite,
No man had the power
To resist her true visage;
Deep eyes as nightshade's fleur.

At sunset, the woman's lips sing
Of hair combed every night.
Oh, the jeweled comb of a priestess,
Radiant as the sun's light.

A traveler's scent stirs above
Seeking what once existed;
The forbidden maiden's visage.
For his eyes now grow misted.

He sees those powerful eyes.
Screams stifled by the priestess;
All turned to stone by Medusa,
Athena's protectress.
