Milk and a Cookie

1. We used to lick the spoon with our face
tie bows and ribbons to any place
give a kiss to Mom and Dad
make that face when we get mad
be the princess in charge of the castle
or be a dwarf who has a great hassle
fire that cannon from the black pirate ship!
or have a tea party with pinkie high sips
we chased butterflies, bunnies, kitties too
tried having hair like Cindy Loo-Whoo
no matter how triumphant we may be
we ended the day with milk and a cookie

2. Today, we have our ups and downs
colliding friendships that end in frowns
parents pace, worry, and fret
wondering why we aren’t home yet
we scream, fight, pout and cry
I lost my phone, oh my oh my
living in the awkward stages
we try to grow up with books and pages
no matter how emotional we may be
we still end the day with milk and a cookie

The author's comments:
One day, I was thinking about how drasticly I've changed from being a little girl into a teenager. Sometimes I wish I was little again so I wouldn't have to face the everyday obstacles that teeagers have to navigate through. I made this poem rhyme because I grew up memorizing nursery rhymes for family enjoyment. I find myself smiling when I read this poem. I hope you crack a smile too.
