Everything we began to known
Would be better if we had thrown
It through a white wobbly window;
Instead, it became a cyclone.

Closing my eyes, I remember
You left like a dying ember;
Shut down like the bitter evening
One night in frosty December.

Blasé words you mumbled gently
Caused me to think differently
And I bit my lip, wondering—
Was it all incidentally?

I wistfully witnessed you leave
As the sky let a hollow heave
And snowflakes trickled down my nose.
I patted my face with my sleeve.

But I must say only this first
Because then was it at its worst—
I did not waste bare breath on you;
I’m certain our roles were reversed.
