The Bullying
She wasn’t popular,
She was never liked,
She was bullied for she wore long skirts,
Not the skimpy ones everyone tried;

If you’d only talk to her,
You’d find her sweet and friendly,
But no one ever did, she was alone,
Nobody kept her company;

Coming to school became her nightmare,
Because her classmates were mean, they were unfair,
They’d pull her hair and push her down,
If she protested, she’d be looked down on with a frown;

The teachers call a class a team,
So why were they doing this to her self-esteem?
She’d put her head down on her desk and cry,
Is being hospitable too hard to try?

One day, she made some decisions,
To say goodbye to her ambitions…
She decided to be happy just for that day,
Because at night she’d be too far away…

Back at home, her family thought,
She had finally settled in with her peers,
They didn’t know her motive,
And when they found out, their eyes welled with tears;

As they walked in through the door,
They found her body, sprawled on the floor,
She held a note which had too much to say,
Her end was a clear message that bullying is NOT okay,

With shaking hands, they read the message in store,
Her grave note bore,

“I just couldn’t wait to end my agony,
I was sick of it; I was tired and lonely,
Tomorrow would’ve been another day I don’t want to face,
So I have decided to end this craze, my teenage phase…

Father, I am sorry,
I couldn’t stay some more,
Mother, I don’t know how to explain,
They shattered me inside, and still had more taunts in store,

Now that I am in heaven,
Be sure that I am happy,
And I am sorry for not being a better daughter,
Sorry for making you bear a life without me…”

With this another happy life ended,
A death that was not meant to be,
For is it too hard to smile and say “Hello”,
Or “Goodbye” to somebody when we go?

So the next time, when someone “unpopular” smiles at you,
Think before you ignore,
For would you want to live and let live,
Or would you want to snatch another lovely future in store?

The author's comments:
I am Samyukta N. I am fifteen. Being a teenager, I have seen my fellow mates being bullied or sometimes I have even experienced it. Through my poem, I want people to know that it is not necessary to use guns or weapons to kill a person, a nasty word or two could do it more easily, what is more important is being nice to them. I am sure we have all heard this line, "It is nice to be important, but it is more important to be nice." And it is high time we start following it.
