Smite is a free to play multiplayer online battle arena “MOBA” where players choose characters with unique abilities and duke it out in 5v5 arena style combat. There are tons of mobas out right now, but what sets Smite apart from competitors like League of Legends or Dota is the third person over the shoulder camera view and the set of playable gods from actual mythology. The game features 47 gods from Chinese, Hindu, Greek, Mayan, Roman and Norse mythologies. These two features make the game feel very intense and dynamic.

Smite is made and owned Hi-rez Studios, an independently own game developer located in Alpharetta Georgia. Hi-rez is known for their previous games Global Agenda and Tribes Ascend. The game plays like a typical MOBA, 3 lanes where you and 4 other players have an objective to destroy your enemies’ structures while also protecting your own. There is also jungle where players will clear camps and objectives to make their gods stronger. The game also has tons of items to buy using gold in game to increase stats like attack speed, defense and damage. I feel this gives the game great replay value because you build your favorite gods into the role you want using items.

The graphics and overall artwork in Smite is awesome, it gives very cool depictions of the gods without straying too far from the pantheon, well known gods like Thor, Poseidon and Zeus are easily recognizable, the game also makes lesser know gods look amazing, like Ymir the frost giant and Kali the goddess of destruction, which I think encourages players to read the lore and brush up on the history of the gods. The game is also in open beta, so content is constantly being added like reworks of maps and even new gods.

Another thing Smite has is a great community; there aren’t that many players, so there aren’t a lot of insults or flaming. Smite also has gamers and even employees from Hi-rez that live stream the all the time to help promote the game. If you don’t want to play casually Smite has a ranked league where you can fight against serious players with a high level of play. If you’re really good Smite has professional teams and a tournament series where first prize is 3,000 dollars. Overall Smite is a great edition to the MOBA genre and a pretty great game to play.
