There were a lot of changes made to the movie when compared to the book. A lot of scenes were cut. The movie gets to the point quicker.
First of all, Sherman isn't in the movie anymore. O'Dell's dad dies instead of Roy Lee. Sonny isn't called "Sonny" in the movie. Sonny's group goes to jail and at the Science Fair only Sonny gets recognized for the award and the rocket ship.
All in all, I think the changes that were made to the movie were for the better.
