Where the Red Fern Grows
Where the Red Fern Grows is about a boy named Billy Coleman who lives with his mom, dad and little sister in the Ozark Mountains during the great depression. Billy’s grandfather owns a general store where all the local coon hunters gather and Billy is always hanging around them listening to their coon stories which encourages Billy to save his money from helping his grandfather and dad and buy his very own coon dog.
One day Billy found a newspaper ad which is talking about two (2) coon dog pups for sale at a very low price. When Billy tries to ask his father about traveling through the mountains to the next town over his father thinks it’s a bad idea so the night Billy packs a sack full of things he would need for hiking and sets off without telling his parents so he can buy what he’s been waiting for, his very own coon dogs.
The reason I like this book is because I like reading books set back in the day and it also teaches life lessons such as responsibility and trust.
