I climb up the ladder, the bright sun piercing my quivering hand
Reluctantly, and to my horror, I finally reach the top
Wee little steps to the end, the bright sun spots my feet-now tanned
I’m petrified, the big kids glare at me and I freeze, releasing a teardrop
And it goes down, down, down until centuries later it finally hits the bottom
Completely frozen I look down, down, down at the other kids splashing around
What if I take a leap of faith and never come back? The big kids screaming got 'em!
What if I finally jump and put my fears away? I’ll be a horror story “Oh Jimmy drowned!”
This is too much. I’ll save it for later. One day I’ll be those big kids with no fear
But for now I climb off and walk away from the high diving board. Maybe next year.
