― Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Crime and Punishment

Oh! now to drown me in the salty brine
To take each bitter gulp into my lung.
I saw you coming; Death, be ever mine.
Now I taste your sweet kiss upon my tongue.
To be alive was punishment alone;
But as the water filled me I felt my
Soul wander the dark. Just dead; not atoned.
Did I not suffer to be free, to fly?
Yet the darkness took me in its hold.
I'd been left; my mind alone - salt was lasting,
My pain and tales they went now long untold,
And on my poor soul Darkness was casting
His dark tales and oh so cruel aspersions.
They caused heaven to give God's aversions.
