Beneath every tongue lies a slimy, black fiend
Named Rumor, scratching and trying to pry
Open Mouths and loudly screech the obscene
For his only sustenance is the lie.
He delights in turning friend against friend
From a whispered accusation he rose
Every word you speak, he will twist and bend,
Feeding on deception, he grows and grows.
Nasty and awful the things you may hear,
From this grotesque creature, most appalling
But like little chickens, the people fear
Spreading panic that the sky is falling
Smirking with pleasure at discord he wrought
Rumor slinks silently into your thoughts.

first try with a sonnet. I don't really like it, but you've got to start somewhere I guess....
