Shouts in the distance

Clamping of boots

War is approaching,

Gettysburg

Blatantly the morning

Rises from its bed

Cannon-fire overhead

Skirmish in the field

Provides no shield

War is approaching

Gettysburg

Here soldiers surge

Fighting through the merge

Falling in the streets

And on the hills

Death is ringing

As rifles are flinging

Doom and destruction near

War is approaching,

Gettysburg

It used to be a name

For which 'they'

Were to blame

War, is approaching

Gettysburg.

A poem I wrote for Mr. Cortes' engaging notes about the Civil War.
