In my english classes

My teachers showed me how to read

Not only the words that sat on the page

But the meanings that they hid underneath.

So now when I see a story

I search for motives and the motifs.

Hidden from sight at first,

But after a while, just within reach.

Everything has a meaning,

A purpose it was meant to fulfill.

Every action comes from emotion.

Emotions are messy and can overspill

Into our daily decisions.

The cuts of the past can sting and infect

Distorting our one sided vision,

Assumption fill up the space that is left.

Assumptions fueled by insecurity,

“Who are they with?”, “What did they say?”

We turn jealous when we have no place to be,

We keep moving backwards from being ok.

And so everything has a meaning.

An emotion that slips through the cracks in our words.

Every action comes from a heart

That longs for love and aches from hurt.

So as I look back on my day,

At my choices in life and the ones that got away,

I look for my hidden meanings

And pray they will give me a reason to stay.
