We drove through the sad little town

Perfect cut lawns

And no one around

We stopped at the town’s only diner

Chocolate milkshakes and cigarette lighters

When the trees turn dense

And we have no defense

Will the loneliness go away

Is the cold mountain air

Enough to freeze away the sadness in our stares

An old man sits alone

Pouring coffee in his cup

He stares at his phone

But his son never picks up

When the trees turn dense

And he has no defense

Will the loneliness go away

Is the cold mountain air

Enough to freeze away the sadness in his stare

A young woman drives away

Away from a marriage she knows she can’t stay

But she can’t make it alone

And she doesn’t know where to go

She won’t ever know where to go

I wrote this song about the lives of people living in small towns. The sadness in the history of the towns and the lonliness that can occur.
