blonde eyelashes now
covered in thick tar

eyelids now made invisible
beneath glitter stars

cheekbones once freckled
appear bronzed or plum

pale lips once enough
now the color of rum

everything must be perfect
every stray hair in place

vanity is a necessity for
God forbid someone sees your face
