A glossy egret
Floats above the pond of mud
Dapper wings unstained

Tall heron patiently,
Waiting over calm waters
For silver snacks

Stiff Scarecrow watches,
dry plains of indian corn
unbent by the frost

Dog waits hopefully,
while undisturbed olive remains
Untouched on the floor.

A brief elation
Followed by sourness
TV Spoilers

The taste of Werther's
Hot leather and dry cleaning
My grandfather's car.

The author's comments:

Each one of these has a different story of some sort. The first two were about the lake outside our classroom (we start each class by writing a haiku). The scarecrow haiku was about the corn mazes my family and I used to go through before we moved. The dog haiku was a true story- or image, as haikus go. My spoiler story has a more complicated story- I watch Game of Thrones, and I haven't been able to start the new season yet. Needless to say, I took all steps neccesary to avoid spoilers, from silencing group chats to avoiding the internet. It was the library that did me in- a magazine, actually titled the spoiler, right there in the front. My last haiku was about my grandfather. He died when I was little, and his car is one of the last things I clearly remember about him.
