You open your eyes
and wish you had never slept
deeper than the sun

The coin on the desk
imprinted with an angel
glints in the morning




l i g h t

Slip beneath you door
the snakes with slithering tongues
you’ve never felt so




a l o n e

Breathing becomes hard
with a knife wedged in your lungs
and you’ve put it there




y o u r s e l f

Prescription bottles
litter the floor where you sit
super glued to the



c a r p e t

The angel burns through
the palm of your shaking hand
almost kissing the



c a p s u l e s

Between cold fingers
and the burning, sinking coin
you’ve never felt so

The author's comments:
I spent a year of my life in depression, dwelling on suicide almost constantly. My brother gave me a coin embossed with an angel, and I began carrying it around as a symbol of hope.
