We all sit around
In that white hospital room
Praying to keep you

Just a few more days
To see you strong and healthy
My wish not granted

The slow beeping noise
Of your scary monitor;
Watching your heart beat

The pain we all feel
Is nothing compared to yours
We know it’s your time

I was five years old
I couldn’t understand why
Everyone was sad

What is the wire?
Why are there all these machines?
Is Papa asleep?

He gripped my hand hard
Told me to be his strong girl
While his voice faded

The cemetery
was filled with people in black
heads down, tears falling

That hole in the earth
Looked like it was miles deep
Where you disappear

What was happening?
Where is my beloved Papa?
In a better place...

I was just a little girl when my grandfather died. I wanted to make something for him on memorial day, a poem, but it turned into this instead. <3
