The bell rings
I make my way to that evil piece of metal
smirking at me from across the hall
# 469, possessed
My tired fingers spiral the small dial
Three steady spins clockwise
21, success
Round 2, the tricky part
Counterclockwise I hesitate to stop
29, although the true number is 27
I push myself to round 3
Hoping that the creature lay unnoticed
37… this round determines if I can outsmart the beast
Hands shaking I struggle
Thriving for success
Just a millimeter over 37
I was waiting for it to reject me
Completely ignore the fact that I’ve been waiting for this day since Kindergarten
With a deep breath I cross my sweaty fingers
Thrusting my thumb against the faded green button
Pressed a million times before me
Luck seemed to be by my side
I had opened my first locker
