I wonder if it's that simple?
I am 14, diabetic, born in Boca.
I went to school there, then DKJA, then here
to this campus on the hill above coconut creek.
I am the only diabetic student in my class.
I get in our car, and we get on the highway
Then on go many small roads that are a bit shady
Past a few school zones, then to the narrow road
Then I walk up my stairs, my heavy feet hammering the stairs
up to my room, drop my bag off, grab my iPad and write this page:
It's not easy to know what is true for you or me
at 14, my age. But I guess I'm what
I feel and see and hear, I hear you:
hear you, hear me---we two---you, me, talk on this page.
(I hear the TV too.) Me---who?
Well, I like to draw, sleep, cook, and be in love.
I like to workout, watch Netflix, write, and think about how to improve myself.
I like a laptop for a Christmas present,
or a camera.
I guess being diabetic  doesn't make me NOT like
the same things other folks like who are normal and healthy.
So will my page be colored that I write?
Being me, it will not be colorful.
But it will be
The color I live in
I live in black and white---
yet a part of me, as I am a part of my camera.
That's me.
Sometimes perhaps you don't want to be a part of me.
Nor do I often want to be a part of you.
But we are, that's true!
As I learn from you,
I guess you learn from me---
although you're different---and healthy---
and somewhat more free.
