To Responsibilities
You gave me a box of pencils to accompany my pen set
So many notebook pages, lines sewn together, full of pen, pencil, pen, pencil
And the two don’t look all that bad together, when the pages overflow
As long as demand never stands higher than the stack of erasers
But as requests tumble in, the pages fill, rivers,
Unstoppable, with pencil, pencil, pencil, pencil
And the notes become crammed between the margins,
Full of graphite desperation, until I must rip out the pages
Leaving behind a single index card
For one drop of ink.
