Time to Learn
You can’t hide from the sun,
as it peeks through your window,
as the world becomes clear around you.
As she sings to you and all those you know,
“It’s time to learn how
to sit up,
to stand,
and to take your first steps.”
But before you can respond
you look down to see your feet running,
at a speed your mind can’t yet comprehend,
your body can’t keep up.
Behind you she sings
“It’s time to learn how.”
You can’t hide from the pavement
as you crash before it,
smelling the hot sticky summer that passed over before you.
As he sings to you and the insects that pay him no mind
“It’s time to learn how
to ignore the scrapes,
the bruises,
the blood creeping down you chin,
to sit up,
to stand,
To run.”
