Dear Dad,
I used to wonder who you are,
But I was just a child,
Living in a world of fantasy,
I thought you must be a hero,
Or someone who would someday come back,
As I grew older,
I learned the truth in bits and pieces,
And mended them together myself,
It’s true,
The truth does hurt,
I always wished for you to come visit me,
When I blew out the candles on my birthday cake,
Whenever I could find a chance to make a wish,
Thanksgiving with the wishbone,
Christmas as I fell into a peaceful slumber,
Every time an eyelash fell from my eye,
I wished to see you,
The calls became less and less often,
The letters and postcards became even less often,
Until they stopped,
I grew up,
Never knowing who you were,
But I was still able to remember your voice,
The words you wrote on a simple piece of paper,
The words you spoke to me on the phone,
Every time you talked to me on the phone as a child,
It was always the same,
I’m trying to move closer,
I’ll visit I promise,
But you never did,
As a child you fed me so much fake hope,
I was so vulnerable and innocent,
Then as I grew up,
I realized they were all lies,
I became stronger and wiser,
Those lies I will never believe,
I’m not vulnerable anymore,
Sincerely,
Your Daughter
