For A Black Girl
“You’re pretty for a black girl”
A boy in passing just told me
But underneath this pretty face
There is substance and knowledge, much more than just beauty
“You’re quiet for a black girl”
A girl just told me
I part seas and move mountains with my mind
There’s so much more to me than what you may see
Because I am a Black girl, I am supposed to know “Black subjects”
About braids, tight clothing, being loud and having plenty of lotion "on deck".
But there is so much more to a black girl
Our knowledge is power, and we could run the world
Many do not realize how the world can turn on our axis
Not a day goes by when on my mind doesn't pass this
Things such as the Space Race and the Civil Rights Movement wouldn’t exist in the world
If it wasn’t for the dreams and the intellect of some strong Black girls
