Tommy bought a pair of high heels
Size twelve, shiny ruby,
They show the way he feels.
Tommy wore the shoes around
His bedroom. Reveling
In their gunshot sound.
In the house when no one is there,
You know the rush
When you don’t have to care.
Even if you should.
Tommy fought the fine line battle
Of how you ever could.
Tommy’s biggest secret lay
In the box beneath the bed
He kept it at bay.
Except for when they leave in a rush,
And the elevator descends,
And all the halls seem hush.
We love our secrets when they stay
Hidden, jailed and ours
They are perfect that way.
Bleeding toe, bruised nail,
As comforting as anything else
Impossible to fail.
But if you did, you know the world
Would fall apart, and so did Tommy
So his wings stay furled.
What lies in that secret place
Beneath your bed, out of sight
Behind your sculpted face.
Show what rages in your head,
Tell the world what lies
In the box beneath your bed.

The author's comments:

This piece was inspired by the struggle of a lot of teens (especially those who identify as LGBT+) who feel like they can't be themselves without serious repercussions. Tommy isn't based off a specific person- he is inspired by the stories of lots of young people who live this balancing act every day.
