I use to never enjoy that strong essence
you graced me with. I’d walk into your home
and be welcomed with the aroma of Chanel perfume.
Oh how annoyed I was when you handed me aged sweets
and stained my cheeks
with reds and pinks.
You always made sure I would give you the biggest hug in the world before leaving.
You’d squeeze me until I could no longer breathe.
I’d fake a smile when you gave me a handmade hat every holiday.

Now,
the odor barely stinks up the air,
my face now pale.
I wish I could give you the biggest hug one more time.
I wear the tattered hat in memory of you.
Oh how I miss you.
