We Used to Love Each Other

He catches her from falling and lays her gently down on the cement, kneeling beside her. As the knife slips through her battered fingers and clatters on the floor, blood seeps down her chest and into her hairline, making it sticky and raw. His face, only inches from hers, pleads to know why: questions flood his eyes and pour down his cheeks, as he pushes the blade further into her heart. Wiping away his tears, his face becomes streaked with red, as she musters the strength to whisper, “We used to love each other.”
