Swimming is my sole transportation,
traveling the world with no destination.
The journey south is treacherous,
we have the same goal—warmer water.
My life as a humpback whale.

We open our mouths wide,
sucking in millions of microscopic krill.
With new energy,
my pod continues this treacherous swim.
My life as a humpback whale.

Faintly I hear
the screams of men.
I jump to the surface:
spotting a boat nearing our pod.
Our lives as humpback whales.

Fear runs through our group as
we swim away from the boat.
The yelling ceases,
until the final shout.
My life as a humpback whale.

I am surrounded in a cage of bubbles.
Feeling leaves my body in waves.
Life begins pulls me away—
towards the men who now yell.
My past life as a humpback whale.
