Putting Away the Silverware
I pause
at the knife block
while putting away the silverware, and feel
the cheapest knife watching
me: wishing
from the back of the block.
I cannot resist moving it
to a slot near the
best knives.
I can sympathize.
How could I forget
last Thursday
in the school parking lot?
I did not know I could blush
like that
when they were more
than a hundred
yards
away…
But is it any better
to be pitied?
Thrown in
With a perfect set,
Like a chipped plate
Stacked harmlessly in the cupboard—
