Pennies of Love
“I found a penny!”
everyone says the day of the wedding.
My soon to be stepdad, his mom, my mom.
Baby’s-breath down the aisle,
baby’s-breath for the bouquets,
baby’s-breath for my mom.
Dusty rose dresses, baby pink ties.
A penny, that’s perfect.,
I thought as I wrote my speech
watching everybody get ready.
My stepdads father passed
with a penny
and he leaves everywhere he is.
He loves my mom and I, we’re told.
I found a penny in my journal
when i wrote my speech.
My mom’s detailed lace dress
with her pearl drop earrings.
A sprinkle of rain came
with a sprinkle of good luck.
Meatballs, lime rickeys, and salad.
My speech, of my mom,
my best friend, my personal journal.
“My…”
Only words I choked out
before crying.
My mom began to cry.
I began to talk
about the love my step dad gives my mother.
He began to cry
I talked about his father’s pennies.
His mother began to cry.
Then it was over.
My mother moved two hours away.
She’s happy.
We have a family again.
