Droplet Soldiers
Car radio
drowned out by raindrops
attacking the windshield
fiercely like
warriors
armor glinting in
the headlights
running in formation
down the windows
dodging big sweeping
blows from the
windshield wiper
thunder claps in
the distance armies
going head to head
sword against sword
tail lights blur
red smudges like
blood darkness
seeps in
hopelessness
despair
a battle that cannot
be won
The rain backs down
sounds of
retreat
over the wind
car plowing on
splitting the air
bright headlights
like stars
like a future
penetrating
still looming clouds.

This piece was inspired by a drive in the rain at night, during which my mind wandered and I began to picture the rain coming down as an army of sorts.
