derby day
the roaring sound of the crowd,
ringing against the rattling noise of the metal gates
hooves pounding on the ground
screams coming from the other horses.
the gates fly open
the bell rings
and the horses fly out of the gates.
the pounding hooves hit the ground
at speeds that lightning could strike
the colors of brown and grey mix
with the colors of the silks
strung on the horses’ backs.
racing past the crowds of people,
dressed in bright colors,
chanting on their horse,
hoping he will win,
the sounds of the jockeys yelling to their horses
trying to get them to the finish line
wanting that shiny trophy and rose garland
that is laid on top of the horses broad, sweaty shoulders
running across the track
soaring through the wind
its like fire.
